š Historic Cork
The Irish name for Cork, **Corcaigh**, means āmarsh.ā The medieval city developed across marshy islands between the two channels of the River Lee, which explains the many bridges and waterways found throughout Cork today.

Cork Harbour is one of the worldās largest natural harbours and has played an important role in Irish trade, defence and emigration.
Its depth varies considerably. The main shipping channel serving Cobh and Ringaskiddy is approximately **11.2 metres deep at low water**, allowing large cruise liners and commercial ships to enter the harbour.
Fota Island sits in the heart of Cork Harbour. Its wildlife park extends across approximately 100 acres and is known for its conservation work and free-roaming animals.

Spike Island has served as a monastery, military fortress and prison during its remarkable 1,300-year history.
The island is dominated by the 200-year-old star-shaped Fort Mitchel. During the 1850s, its prison population exceeded 2,300, making it the largest known prison in the world at that time.
