The Experience

🚁 Cork Harbour & Spike Island Scenic Explorer

Take to the skies on an unforgettable helicopter tour departing from Cork Racecourse, Mallow.

After take-off, enjoy spectacular views across the Blackwater Valley as your flight routes south towards Cork City. See the River Lee winding through the city before continuing towards the magnificent Cork Harbour.

Depending on Air Traffic Control clearance, the route may offer views over Fota Island, home to the famous Fota Wildlife Park, before continuing towards historic Spike Island—often described as ā€œIreland’s Alcatraz.ā€

As you admire the countryside, city and harbour below, your pilot will point out notable landmarks before gradually returning to Cork Racecourse.

Don’t forget your camera so you can relive the experience with friends and family and show off your fantastic photographs. šŸ“ø

šŸ“œ Historic Cork

The Irish name for Cork, **Corcaigh**, means ā€œmarsh.ā€ The medieval city developed across marshy islands between the two channels of the River Lee, which explains the many bridges and waterways found throughout Cork today.

The English Market opened in 1788 and remains one of Ireland’s best-known covered food markets.

āš“ Cork Harbour

Cork Harbour is one of the world’s largest natural harbours and has played an important role in Irish trade, defence and emigration.

Its depth varies considerably. The main shipping channel serving Cobh and Ringaskiddy is approximately **11.2 metres deep at low water**, allowing large cruise liners and commercial ships to enter the harbour.

Fota Island sits in the heart of Cork Harbour. Its wildlife park extends across approximately 100 acres and is known for its conservation work and free-roaming animals.

šŸ° Spike Island

Spike Island has served as a monastery, military fortress and prison during its remarkable 1,300-year history.

The island is dominated by the 200-year-old star-shaped Fort Mitchel. During the 1850s, its prison population exceeded 2,300, making it the largest known prison in the world at that time.
