📜 Historic Note

Clew Bay was once the stronghold of Gráinne O’Malley—also known as Grace O’Malley or Granuaile—the legendary 16th-century Pirate Queen of Connacht. She commanded ships along Ireland’s western coastline and famously met Queen Elizabeth I at Greenwich Palace in 1593. 👑

Local tradition says that Clew Bay contains 365 islands—one for every day of the year. In reality, the bay contains more than 100 small islands and islets, many formed from partially submerged glacial drumlins. 🏝️

Overlooking the bay is Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holy mountain. Pilgrims have climbed it for more than 1,500 years, particularly on Reek Sunday, which takes place on the last Sunday in July. A small chapel stands on the summit, and some pilgrims traditionally complete the rocky climb barefoot as an act of penance. ⛪
